Fine food and heavenly views

The picturesque views from the restaurant at Le Moulin set the scene for a perfect meal. On summer evenings, watch the sun go down. In winter, the ceramic fire adds a homely glow. Our chef Eric changes the menu each day and traditional dishes are his absolute forte.

Food, glorious food...

Eric also has a wonderful way with fish and with France's largest fishing port, Boulogne-sur-Mer so close he regularly comes up with some mouth-watering fish dishes. If you are lucky, you'll get to try Eric's favourite dessert, omelette à la norvégienne (Norwegian omelette), otherwise known as Baked Alaska. This show-stopping pudding, made from ice-cream and cake, is so difficult to create yet exceedingly easy to eat. Eric's Creme Brûlée is a dream too so don't be shy.

Love it tender

If you love steak, then you are in for a treat as Eric selects the best cuts from Blanc Bleu Belge beef cattle (Belgian Blue), a breed of cattle you find in abundance around this area. These steaks are exceptionally succulent and low in fat and, with Eric's magic touch, they just melt in your mouth. Carbonnade a la Flamande (Flemish beef and brown beer stew) and Lapin aux Pruneaux (rabbit with prunes) are regulars on the menu. But, as the menu changes each day, you'll be able to make your way through an array of traditional dishes if you are here for a short stay.

Check out the cheeses

While you are at Le Moulin, don't hold back on the cheese. The Mimolette is probably the best-known local cheese and is at its best after 18 to 24 months of maturing. Another classic is the soft cheese Vieux Boulogne – reckoned to be the smelliest cheese in the world but nevertheless well worth a try. There are also some superbly tangy goat cheeses to taste – especially with some smooth claret from Le Moulin's cosy but very well stocked bar!

To the bar

After dinner, you can relax with a few more drinks in the bar. It may be small, but there is a wide selection of wines, spirits and liqueurs. This welcoming nook also has a fire which is lit on cold days or if you ask one of the staff. There really isn't a need to venture very far in search of gorgeous gourmet food during your stay at Le Moulin but if you love seafood then we can highly recommend a fish restaurant at the port at Boulogne – just ask at reception, we'll be glad to let you in on the secret!

French Breakfast2

Breakfast is served

Breakfast at Le Moulin is simple and traditional and can be enjoyed in your room or back in the dining room. Indulge in freshly-baked baguettes, buttery croissants and rich pain au chocolate with fresh fruit and yoghurt. Wash it all down with cold juices, steaming cafe au lait or a simple cup of breakfast tea, and we truly believe you will have the best start to your day...

Eric Chef at Le Moulin Hotel, France

About our chef

Our chef Eric was born and raised in Desvres and sources most of the food locally. He is friends with many of the farmers in the area so he really is in the know.

Eric has been a chef for over thirty years and has run his own restaurants so he literally has hundreds of tried and tested traditional recipes at his fingertips. He truly wants you to enjoy each and every morsel of the food he lovingly prepares.

He's a little shy and rather elusive and the kitchen is his comfort zone but that is probably what makes him such a master chef!

“Lovely hotel”

“Stayed here twice now as a stopover for traveling down through France and loved it both times. The location is ideal, very calming and beautiful. The driveway is off a road through a woodland so can sometimes be hard to spot first time. We always sleep so well as it is peaceful and the beds are very comfy.
Breakfast is very good, lots of choice and fresh baked croissants and bread. The staff are friendly and the rooms are clean. The view from the dining room is stunning and the food in the evening was delicious.
Desvres town is very close by, easily walkable and has a lovely market.
We will definitely be going back and recommend it highly!”
